They weren’t satisfied with British laws and wished to be independent. The Representatives of British colonies established a committee to prepare the Declaration of Independence. Colonies agreed to contribute.

Thomas Jefferson, a very famous lawyer with a sense of justice, worked 17 days over this Declaration which was adopted on the 4th July 1776. He was quite mild in threating Brits. He was great diplomatic.
